The Burghers Of Calais

"These figures known as THE BURGHERS OF CALAIS commemorate six citizens of that town who offered themselves as hostages to Edward III after he had vainly besieged their town for nearly a year in 1347. The story goes that their lives were spared on the intercession of Edward's queen Philippa of Hainhault."

Under French law no more than twelve casts of this piece (completed in 1888) were permitted after Rodin’s death. The London casting, purchased by the British Government in 1911, is one of them.

My favorite public sculpture in London - I'm gutted you've beaten me to it! ;-)
I just didn't get to it soon enough I guess (maybe I'll photo it some day from another viewpoint!). I always like to visit it when I'm in Westminster and have the time . . . the physical scale he's pitched it at is just fantastic! Large enough to give it incredible visual weight, but still close enough to human scale for real empathy. If anyone doesn't know it, go, see it in the flesh, take a look at the hands – and really understand what sculpture* is about!
*and I don't just mean figurative!
