Nativity

One of a wonderful sequence of paintings in Berwick Church, Sussex, carried out by members of the Bloomsbury Group, including Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell.

An ancient village church, and a small modernist masterpiece in the heart of the English countryside. Close to the Bloomsbury farmhouse, near Lewes.

There's a good trail on the 24 Hour Museum which takes in Berwick Church:

and a well put together archive journey on the Tate's website:

Yes, good to see this. I've done this trail. Anyone in Sussex in the summer will find this worth doing. With some good pubs too. Recommended: The Cricketer's Arms, Berwick.

I love these murals; I visit the church whenever I'm in the area. It also resonates with the Powell and Pressburger Film, A Canterbury Tale, and also A Matter of Life and Death though I've never been entirely sure why; perhaps the inclusion of "ordinary" people in some of the images.

Yes, Kimpeat. I see what you mean about the use of ordinary people.
