So many beautiful Yew trees. It's such a pity that so many churches were built around them! Waverley Abbey, Farnham Surrey.
Yew trees are sacred to the ancient pagan's of this island. When christianity was invented and started it's spread outward from Rome they consumed, subverted and appropriated all in their wake as far as worship, customs and belief were concerned. Hence the coincidences with easter and spring fertility rites and various other festivals with Roman pagan gods, christmas near the shortest day etc. , etc., and .... the appropriation of sacred sites where Yew trees stood to become christian churches. Anyway, the trees are superb!
