Walkerburn - The Old Mill Bell & "The Wee Man"

On the left is the original statue from the War Memorial. Constructed in 1921 by public subscription, it is smaller than life size and became known as the "Wee Man". It remained in place at the War Memorial further up the road until it was stolen on 9th August 1998. A new statue was again funded by public subscription and this life size replacement, dedicated by HRH The Princess Royal on Monday 20th September 1999, now occupies the War Memorial. The "Wee Man" was found and returned on 3rd February 2000.
Following renovation, again funded by public subscription, it was placed on this site on 2nd December 2001.
The Mill Bell comes from the original Walkerburn Mill. It was rung to summon workers to the mill and to signal lunch breaks and the end of the working day. The bell is on loan to Walkerburn & District Community Council from Robert Noble Ltd of Peebles.

This Memorial site was funded by public subscription and was dedicated by Miss Mollie McIntosh MBE, chairman of Walkerburn & District Community Council on 9th August 2002. These two items represent a significant part of Walkerburn's history and this site is for the benefit of the residents of the village plua those not yet privileged to live in Walkerburn.
