says:I know this Barrel Man. It's to do with Leeds' twin town of Dortmund I think. it's in Dortmund Square isn't it (off the Headrow)? I love the wrapping! The barrier tape mischievously subverts the message of civic pride, foreign trade and international harmony that 'twinning' is supposed to be all about. Unwrapped, the sculpture looks a bit naff, like a gigantic, (German edition) 'Monopoly' piece, or the kind of tourist souvenir you might bring back from a holiday in Western Germany. Which it turns out it was . . . or at least it was a present to Leeds from the mayor of Dortmund.
I like it better like this.

says:Yes as far as I was aware it was a 'peace gift.' I think this bit of public art is an advert for the oncoming "Situation Leeds" festival - www.situationleeds.org.uk.
