In 1903 an equestrian statue – by Thomas Brock – of the Black Prince (Prince of Wales, eldest son of King Edward III) was erected in City Square. Eight ‘nymphs’ by Alfred Drury, of the 19th century, ‘New Sculpture’ movement surround the square. As a spotty adolescent yob in 1970s Leeds, these barely-draped mythological figures gave me my my first erotically-charged art experience – and could have moved me to higher thoughts . . . were I sensitive enough to be moved to such things at the time!
