Up until 1955 three statues stood atop of the corner of Castle Street and High Street looking down on the inhabitants of Inverness. Modelled on the Greek mythological figures, the Three Graces, they quickly became known to the people of Inverness as the three virtues: faith, hope and charity. Struck by this, Matt Baker, Lead Artist for the Inverness Old Town Art (IOTA) project sought to investigate which three virtues best characterised contemporary Inverness. Engaging local communities, eighty nominations were put-forward, debated and finally narrowed down to three new virtues for Inverness: Perseverance, Open-heartedness and Insight.
In the Three Virtues, Inverness’ surrounding landscape is transposed into the city centre; three birch tress sit atop of three sloping outcrops of Caithness stone, into each is written one of the chosen new virtues for Inverness
