Even though Lifford has deeply rooted historical significance, local people felt that the town had been overlooked in recent years and not been given the respect it deserved - particularly as it is the official entrance to the county of Donegal. The three coins were built to re-establish the identity of Lifford and form a commemmorative gateway that can be read on many different levels: the number three is also symbolic for faith, and marks the three rivers that converge at Lifford. Each coin has pictorial references to Lifford's past and present attributes and the artist specially commissioned a unique Latin phrase to be embossed around each rim, symbolic of the heart's cry for the town: "Praeterita Fecunda ~ Futura Praeclara". Loosely translated, 'Rich Heritage, Bright Future'. Situated on the central roundabout in Lifford, and respectively the 3 coins stand at 4.5m, 3m and 2.5 m in height...
