Buren Columns

The Buren columns are situated in the courtyard of the Palais Royal. The cafes and market stalls once housed here were the unlikely starting point for the storming of the Bastille, flashpoint for the French Revolution in 1789. Buren's interventionist work featuring his signature vertical stripes caused such a furore in twentieth-century Paris that initial installation work was interrupted. François Léotard, then Minister of Culture and Communication, relaunched the project in 1986. It was completed in 1995.

There's a bar next to it called 'Le Caveau' that I recommend and it's also next to the ParisParis which is the most trendy club in Paris at the moment that I don't recommend so much.

There are blue light besides the water stream all around the place (beneath where the man is standing) which makes the whole place very fairy. I like this city so much!

Everyone was stood on the Buren columns that day - I guess they always do. They are kind of inviting. That shot (which my partner took) was the only one that didn't have loads of people in it. My excuse for standing on a work of art? – i bust my teeth and lost sleep writing a seminar I had to deliver on Daniel Buren whilst doing my fine art degree – I like his work, but this was my pay-back – to stand on the b-stard!
